   Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.  How do I become a member of the MACVSA?
A.  If you are a Certified Examiner with the Computerized Voice Stress Analyzer merely print a copy of the membership application and follow the directions on the document. If your geographic location is outside the Midwest Association's regional boundary merely click on the IACVSA's link and view the application page on that website. Each state and their respective regional association is listed on page 2.

Q.  How often does the MACVSA provide continuing education training for CVSA Examiners?
A.   The MACVSA offers training in the spring and fall of each year. Because the MACVSA has grown to over 400 members we have offered a third training seminar in two locations in New York in the past two years.  We are currently investigating the possibility of a third seminar for 2006 in New Jersey. Check this website for further information, as it becomes available.

Q.  How can I become recertified as a CVSA Examiner with the MACVSA?
A.  The MACVSA has recertified its members for several years. The requirements for recertification is that the examiner must be in good standing with any regional CVSA association; must attend at least two (2) training seminars within the past three years, and the recertification seminar can count toward that number; and, must pass a recertification test.

Q.  How do I obtain a password to enter the members-only section?
A.  The members-only section is restricted to members of the MACVSA. If you are a member of the MACVSA please click on "Comments" located on the left side of the home page. On the "Comments" page please type your request for a password in the box provided. Also, complete the information directly below the comments box. If you are a member in good-standing you will be contacted for a password and user name of your choice.

Q.  Sometimes I need a cold call and don't know where to turn. Can you advise a solution?
A.  As a member of the MACVSA you have a cold call list of 350 members. Merely go to the members-only section and locate an examiner in your area or elsewhere. You may also contact any board member and their information is located on the Board of Directors link.

Q.  My department prefers advanced notice for coming seminars, and often more than the 6-8 weeks when seminar flyers are mailed. Can you advise if there is a pattern to the time and location of MACVSA seminars?
A.  The MACVSA presently has two seminars per year, typically in April and November. The seminar's pattern is to have two successive seminars in Columbus, OH. and two in Indianapolis, IN. The reason for two in a row is because our primary recertification class is held in November, and this method alternates the recertification class from Ohio and Indiana each year.

Q.  What is the purpose of CVSA recertification, and why do I need it?
A.

Recertification is mandated by NITV, the CVSA's manufacturer; but, that isn't the biggest reason. Polygraph has no set educational requirements after the first year; and, consequently, they have some problems reading other polygraph examiner's charts. The only way that CVSA examiners can remain sharp, observe proper testing procedures, and have the ability to give accurate cold calls (read other examiner's charts) is to attend training seminars. An examiner must be recertified at least every three years. Without that recertification requirement examiners could develop bad habits and may not realize it. That could result in the examiner making bad calls, which would not be good for the case, the department, or the examiner. The department should also consider the legal ramifications of allowing a de-certified examiner to run CVSA examinations. Vicarious liability flows upward. It is very important for examiners to maintain their certification and conduct proper tests.

Q.  Is the MACVSA interested in video recordings of interviews and successful interrogations involving the CVSA?
A.  Yes.  We are very interested.  Please contact the administrator through this website for further information.  There may also be monetary remuneration for video recordings accepted.
